WORLD SOURCES:
There are gem deposits in almost every nation on Earth. Most of these, however, are of interest only to scientists and collectors. More than fifty countries do have deposits of significant value. About twenty are important producers and six stand out as world leaders while sources also may change.
It’s often impossible to tell where a particular gem came from once it has been mined and cut.
The Leaders:
Because of the volume, quality or variety of their production, six countries are currently leading sources of colored gems they are.
Brazil: Top source for amethyst, citrine and topaz in the world. And much of the world’s aquamarine and tourmaline. It is also a significant producer of emerald, garnet, iolite and opal.
Columbia: Is the world’s leading source of fine emerald, ruby and sapphire.
Madagascar: Source of alexandrite, cat’s-eye, spinel, topaz, tourmaline, emeralds, ruby, amethyst, citrine, garnet, iolite, opal and zircon.
Myanmar: Produces the world finest ruby and high-quality jade also amethyst, chrysoberyl, citrine, garnet, iolite, peridot, sapphire, spinel, topaz, tourmaline and zircon.
Sri Lanka: Produces fine sapphire , alexandrite, cat’s-eye, ruby, moonstone, spinel, topaz, tourmaline, zircon, amethyst, citrine, garnet, iolite, peridot, apatite, kornerupine, scapolite, sinhalite and sphene.
Tanzania: Most important gemstone is tanzanite also produces sapphires, amethyst, tourmaline, ruby, garnet, alexandrite, cat’s-eye, spinel, aquamarine, emerald, opal, peridot, spinel, topaz and zircon.
